Vacaville Police Department press release

A 19-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday evening following the detonation of an explosive device at a park in Vacaville. Vacaville police received a call from Kaiser Hospital that a 19-year-old man had arrived with serious injuries caused by an explosive device. Officers determined that the victim and a group of friends had participated in detonating the device at Centennial Park, 501 Browns Valley Road, in Vacaville. During the course of the investigation, five witnesses and two suspects were identified who had participated in detonating the device, which was determined to be a pipe bomb.

Both suspects, the victim, and a group of high school students had previously met in order to discuss detonating the device. The victim ignited the pipe bomb using a homemade fuse and attempted to throw the device. The device prematurely detonated in the victim's hand, causing serious injuries which resulted in the loss of two fingers. The victim was then transported to Kaiser Hospital, Vacaville, by his friends for treatment. Bryan Cook, 18, of Vacaville and a 17-year-old juvenile, also of Vacaville, were ultimately arrested for manufacturing, transporting, and possessing the explosive device. Officers conducted a search of several locations and vehicles, but no other explosive devices or bomb making materials were located. The investigation determined that the construction of this device did not involve any plots or threats to people or institutions. The Vacaville Police Department would like to remind everyone that making, handling or transporting an explosive device is against the law. The detonation of any explosive device by untrained persons could result in serious injury, damage to property or the loss of life. If you discover an explosive device do not touch the device, leave the area and call 911 immediately.
